Lakhs in cash, several gas cylinders stolen from godown in Joynagar

Miscreants barged into a gas godown at Mollarchak area of Joynagar in South 24 Parganas district and looted around Rs 8 lakh rupees cash and several gas cylinders after tying up the employees. The incident occurred at late Sunday night and triggered tension in the area.

Employees of the gas godown reportedly told police that the miscreants were 25-30 in number and had came in a truck. The goons stormed into the godown, situated on Jamtala road, a little after midnight.

The godown’s night guard Abul Hossain heard a loud thud and saw that the goons had entered the godown by breaking open the main gate. When Hossain refused to hand over to the dacoits the key of the locker, they beat him up severly and snatched the key from him on gunpoint.

The miscreants took away all the money inside the locker and also took away 204 loaded gas cylinders. After looting all possible valuables from the godown, the miscreants fled the spot in the truck.

After being informed, police reached the spot and initiated an investigation. They came to know after interrogating the godown employees that around Rs 8 lakh was looted from the locker.

Some local people, meanwhile, staged a protest against the burglary and also blamed police inaction for such incidents in the area.

The owner of the gas godown later lodged a complaint in the local police station. Police are still continuing with the interrogation of the godown employees in this connection. They have also interrogated the employee injured, who was seriously injured in the incident.

Police are also investigating whether the dacoits had even stolen the truck which they used to load up the stolen cylinders and flee the spot. Police are yet to arrest anybody in this connection.
