Labour MP seeks exchange of Rs 500, Rs 1,000 notes for NRIs

Indian-origin Labour MP Virendra Sharma on Wednesday urged PM Narendra Modi to facilitate exchange services for Indian citizens and NRIs in the UK and elsewhere to help them convert Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, following the demonetisation of those notes.

"The demonetisation of 500 and 1000 Indian Rupee notes has caused significant inconvenience and hardship to thousands of Indian citizens and NRIs not based in India. The Indian government has not put in place enough safeguards to ensure that people with legitimate savings they have worked hard for are not left worse off," Sharma said.

"I have written to Modi to ask that exchange services are provided abroad so that people are able to change the notes they legally kept hold of into legal tender. During discussions with the Indian High Commission in London and Acting High Commissioner Dinesh Patnaik we agreed that we must work to ensure that UK residents are not left out of pocket," he said.
