Labour department campaigns in factories, reduces fatal accident numbers

To check any type of fatal and non-fatal accidents at factories, the State Productive Council under the State Labour Department has been organising awareness programmes in various places and this has immensely contributed in imparting knowledge among the workers involved in various hazardous jobs.

The workers who were at risk and are always exposed to danger have been taught how to check accidents at the factories.

A comprehensive plan has been developed to implement the prevention of industrial accidents. The workers have been undergoing training by the state government so that they can take preventive measures to avert any such accidents at their work places.

As per the data available with the Labour department, in 2015 around 38 people met with fatal accidents at factories, while in 2014 the number stood at 63 which is much lower than its previous year when the figure was 96. The records show that in last three years the figure has gone down nearly three times following the campaign carried out by the department.

It may be mentioned that there were some guidelines laid down by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the objectives of which are to put in place a legal and technical system for the control of major hazard installations.

The state government was following all the recommendations of the ILO in this regard, a senior official of the department said.

State Labour Minister Malay Ghatak said that around 142 accident training camps have been done by his department in 2015-16 and those have resulted in reducing the rate of accidents. Even in 2011-12 there were 101 camps conducted in the state. In 2014 also there were nearly 80 such camps in the factories.

Trainings were mainly given on safety measures so that workers should know about the hazards of machine, the areas where accidents may take place and what the possible precautions in case of an accident are. To ensure that accidents do not happen due to faulty machines a proper maintenance was being done.

Even the senior officials of the Labour department inspect hazard prone factories or the major accident sites on a regular interval to take a stock of the situation.

Mock drills are performed. In the last year more than 1000 inspections were done by the department while in 2014 there were 1,057 inspections in factories in 2014 and 1,207 in 2013. The minister also said that the disciplinary action should be taken against those who will flout safety measures.

“Our department is committed to check any kind of accidents in factories. A number of initiatives were carried out to prevent such incidents. Awareness programmes were being performed to educate the workers involved in hazardous jobs on preventive measures,” Ghatak maintained.
