Youth refuses to take part in IPL bet, gets slashed

Gamblers slashed a youth with razor after he refused to participate in an IPL bet on Sunday night in Malda district's Milki village.

Police learnt that Safikul Shekh, a daily-wage labourer, refused to bet on Kolkata Knight Riders' victory on Sunday night against the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The gamblers, literally at knife-point, forced him to bet his money on KKR. The youth, in his desperate bid to break free, tried to escape but he was caught and his face, arms, legs and wrist were slashed with a shaving razor.

The gamblers soon fled the spot after committing the crime and the youth lay there with his injuries. His family members saw him lying with his wounds and rushed him to the hospital.
"The victim earlier participated in a gamble during another IPL match where he had won some money. But the gamblers forced him to bet on Sunday night and the youth had straightway turned down the proposal. But his refusal made them furious and they attacked him," said a police officer.

However, the Malda police were informed about several such betting

rackets across the district during this IPL season.

The district police raided several places to search for such rackets and arrested several gamblers.

"We have taken information from the injured youth. We will soon act on it and those accused gamblers will soon be arrested," said a police officer.
Police have also started patrolling during the IPL matches in the afternoons and evenings as well.
