Youth murdered in Canning, cops suspect old rivalry

A youth was hacked to death by some unidentified miscreants when he was returning home on Monday night.

The victim has been identified as Mokaddesh Khan who was declared brought dead after being taken to the Canning sub-divisional hospital. The victim's family members also received serious injuries when they tried to protect the victim from the accused.

The incident occurred near his house at Ramchandrakhali village of Basanti in South 24 Parganas. Police said that the victim was returning home when a gang comprising seven members stopped his way. They started beating the victim with iron rods. The victim fell on the ground after receiving several blows on his head. After hearing the screaming of the victim, his family members rushed to the spot for his rescue. The victim's wife and elder brother who came to his rescue were beaten up by the miscreants. Before the local residents reached the spot, the miscreants fled from the spot. The local residents told police that the miscreants came on motorcycles. The injured were taken to the Canning sub-divisional hospital where they are currently undergoing treatment. After being informed, police reached the spot and started a probe in this regard. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.

According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that some old rivalry might have led to the incident. Police are, however, not ruling out that this could be result of some family dispute. In the course of the investigation, police came to know that there was a long-standing dispute in the family over a piece of land and this might have caused the incident. Police also came to know in the interrogation that the victim had engaged in a quarrel with some of his relatives in connection with the disputed plot. Police have started a detailed probe in this connection and are conducting raids to nab the culprits.
