Youth falls from train, kept unattended at Katwa hospital

Kolkata: In another incident of medical negligence, a youth who had sustained serious injuries after falling from a running train had been kept unattended for nearly four hours.
He was later shifted to the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital on Saturday morning. It was learnt that the victim fell from a running train at Katwa station on late Friday night and received serious injuries on his legs and other parts of the body. The victim has been identified as Shailen Roy who is from Murshidabad.
The local people heard the screams of the victim and rushed to the spot to find him lying in a pool of blood. The local people rescued the victim and took him to the Katwa Sub-Divisional hospital.
The local people alleged that after some primary treatment, the victim was left on the floor. The victim was screaming in pain but none allegedly treated him. When the local people asked a senior
doctor of the hospital why the patient was left on the floor for a long a time when he was suffering from
tremendous pain, the doctor allegedly told
them there were certain procedure needed to be followed.
When the local people staged a demonstration, the hospital staff members told them that the patient was transferred to Burdwan
Medical College and Hospital. On the wee hours of Saturday, the victim was shifted to the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital.
The hospital authorities, however, claimed that the patient was kept on the floor as he was about to be shifted to another hospital and was waiting for the ambulance to pick him up.
The hospital authorities also claimed that the nurses also attached saline bottle to the patient as he was wreathing in pain. The patient is undergoing treatment at the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital with critical injuries.
Police have started a probe into the incident.
