Youth beaten to death at rehab centre

KOLKATA: A youth was beaten to death at the drug and alcohol Rehabilitation Centre in Sonarpur in South 24-Parganas sparking fear among other inmates.
It was alleged that employees of the Rehab Centre beat up the victim very badly. The victim, Rajesh Chowdhury was undergoing treatment at the Centre for the past one week. It is alleged that he was subjected to torture ever since he was taken to the Centre.
On Sunday night, he was allegedly beaten up.
The family members of the victim alleged that Chowdhury died after being beaten up by some of the staff members of the rehab.
Another inmate of the Rehab Centre told the police that the victim was with them till Sunday evening. He was then taken to a separate chamber by the night guard.
Later, they heard the screams of the victim and noticed pieces of cloth tied around his face, legs and hands. He was tied against a window with a rope by some staff.
The inmate also informed that some of the inmates of the Rehab Centre protested against the incident but none paid heed to them. Staff continued to torture the victim till late Sunday night. The victim finally succumbed to his injuries on Monday.
The incident brought to light the fact that rehab inmates are never safe. None of the Rehab Centre officials were available for a comment on the issue.
The family members of the victim alleged that they were kept waiting for nearly 7 hours at the local police station following which a complaint was registered.
On the basis of the complaint, police have started a probe in this regard. The body was sent to a hospital for postmortem.
Police are yet to find out the exact reason behind the victim being beaten up by the staff members.
