Youth absconds after double murder at Mogra

Kolkata: Two persons including an elderly woman were hacked to death at Mogra village in Bankura Sadar area. The accused youth, identified as Arup Chowdhury, fled after murdering the duo.

According to sources, on Monday morning Gunomoy Chowdhury (56), an employee of the state Forest department, went out of his home for morning walk. While he was walking, Arup came and attacked Gunomoy with an axe, stabbing him multiple times.

Seeing Gunomoy getting stabbed, locals tried to detain Arup. But before they could reach him, he fled the spot.

The victim was rushed to a local hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Meanwhile, after a few moments of stabbing Gunomoy, Arup again attacked an elderly woman identified as Lichu Roy (74) while she was walking along the road.

Arup stabbed her repeatedly as well and fled the spot. Roy was also rushed to the hospital, where she was declared brought dead.

Arup's family claimed that he is mentally challenged, citing it as the reason behind his actions. However, the villagers refused to believe this and claimed that the murder of Gunomoy was a pre-planned one.

Sources informed that a conflict was present between Arup and Gunomoy's family over some land-related dispute, which is suspected to be the motive. However, it is not clear as to why he attacked Roy.

Police have lodged two murder cases and are searching for Arup. After the incident, villagers agitated in front of Arup's house. It has been alleged that his family members were assaulted by the mob as well. Police are questioning Arup's family members to identify a possible motive and his hideout.
