Kolkata: The work to construct the International Youth Hostel at Moore Avenue in South Kolkata will start by the end of this fiscal year.
The state Public Works Department (PWD) has taken necessary steps to start the construction of the youth hostel of international standard in Kolkata by March.
According to a senior PWD official, the process to float tender has already started. "We are considering to start the construction in the current financial year and if everything goes
as planned it would be in March," he said.
It was learnt that the idea was conceived by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and it was in the beginning of 2017 when the state government had decided to build the youth hostel of international standard in south Kolkata.
Sources said the youth hostel will come up on a plot of around 26 acres. The decision to construct the same was taken to facilitate students from foreign countries who often visit the city of joy for different purposes including studies and other skill development programmes.
There will be accommodation of around 300 people in the youth hostel, which will consist of more than ten floors. The PWD engineers have started taking steps to construct the state-of-the-art building that will be another gift to the city from the state
government.
It may be mentioned that the state PWD has constructed the state-of-the-art open air theatre Uttirnya in Alipore.
Similarly, the PWD is now working to construct the International Youth Hostel with all sorts of facilities under one umbrella. Moreover, the youth hostel will also house game zones, a gymnasium and an open space with beautiful landscaping for morning or evening walk.
There will be badminton courts in the hostel. "Such facilities are essential as people from different parts of the country and abroad will be staying here and these facilities are available in the hostels of developed countries," said an engineer of the state PWD adding that the entire hostel will be a wi-fi zone.
Unlike the existing youth hostels in the city, the new one will be having a huge lounge where boarders can pass their leisure time. It may be mentioned that there will be accommodation of 300 people at a time while other hostels in the districts can accommodate only 100 at a time.
