Work begins for complete overhaul of signalling system near Dum Dum

Kolkata: The Eastern Railway has started work for complete overhaul of the signalling system near Dum Dum station to address the issue of late running of trains in the Sealdah North division.
"We are setting up route relay interlocking system and at the same time upgrading tracks and points near Dum Dum station. Work is going on in full swing," a senior official of ER said.
A number of sections in the North section like Barrackpore, Bongaon, Dankuni etc gets separated from Dum Dum junction station. It may be mentioned that the line capacity at this junction station is at its maximum and there is no place for extension. Added to this, there is also the line of circular railways that terminates at Dum Dum and travels to different directions.
"Late running of local
trains in the North section can be avoided to a great extent if the clogging of trains at this station can be handled in a more effective manner," the official added.
ER engineers believe that the time taken for giving green signal to the trains will become half with the introduction of this system.
Express trains that travel towards Sealdah station also gets stuck ahead at Dum Dum station as the railway authorities struggle with the smooth flow of trains here. The problem is maximum during the office hours in the morning with more trains travelling to and fro in this division.
The ER had earlier planned to construct an elevated track for the trains travelling to Bongaon and vice versa. The plan was to make the trains travel directly from Ultadanga to Dum Dum Cantonment station without touching Dum Dum. However, the plan had to be shelved due to non availability of land.
