Women cops to soon manage traffic in city

Kolkata: For the first time ever in the history of the city, Kolkata Police is going to introduce women police personnel to manage traffic.
At the same time, they will also be taking prompt action in case any woman needs help or is harassed.
According to the sources, 40 newly recruited women constables underwent training at the Police Training School and will be deployed soon at different parts of the city.
It has been learnt that they have been provided training to ride two-wheelers and at the same time, they have also gone through training programmes in which they learnt how to manage traffic, even during rush hours.
Till date, people have witnessed traffic sergeants moving around the city on motorcycles and taking all necessary steps to ensure better traffic management. They take immediate steps if they find any vehicle parked in a no-parking area. The women police will also be carrying out the same task.
It may be mentioned that Kolkata Police has taken several steps to ensure that women do not face any problem while walking down the streets, even at night. In a bid to improve the security arrangement, the women police will be posted at different places. According to the sources, this is another reason behind taking the decision to introduce the women police.
According to an official in the city police, it is often found that people approach traffic sergeants whenever they face any sort of problem on the road. Before going to any police station, people approach traffic sergeants who are on-duty at different points.
Similarly, women will feel free speaking out to women police, in case they face any harassment. The women police will reach the spot on their motorcycles to extend necessary help.
Sources said that Rajeev Kumar, Commissioner of Police, also went to oversee the training of the women police personnel. He gave necessary advice to ensure that they are trained properly.
It has been learnt that the training of the women police is complete and now, the concerned police officers will hold a high level meeting to decide from when they will start performing their duty.
At present, the officers are carrying out necessary tasks to finalise the areas where they need to be deployed.
According to experts, it is a revolutionary move to engage women for management of traffic. Moreover, this comes at the time when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has taken several steps for women empowerment.
