Woman's tied-up body found in Bakultala; daughter, son in-law arrested

Kolkata: A woman was allegedly murdered by her daughter and son in-law at Bakultala in Behala. On Sunday morning, police found the body tied with nylon rope, near her home.

Later, a neighbour of the deceased informed police that she had seen the couple carrying the body. The duo has been reportedly arrested and the husband of the victim has been detained for questioning as well.

According to sources, on Sunday morning Parnasree police station was informed by some locals that a body was found in Bakultala's Basudevpur Road. Immediately, police reached the spot and found the woman's body with her throat slit, wrapped in a cloth and tied with a nylon rope. After police revealed her face, locals identified the victim as Sampa Chakraborty (47) of 2, Basudevpur Road.

According to locals, Sampa used to stay with her husband Bhupal Chakraborty in a room on the roof of a four-storey building, which is styled as a small flat. After sending the body for autopsy examination, police went to Sampa's flat close to the spot where her body was found, but found it locked.

When Bhupal or any of Sampa's relatives were not found, police broke the door and went inside the flat. During investigation, blood stains were found inside the room.

Meanwhile, one of Sampa's neighbours informed police that she had seen her daughter and son in-law, identified as Riya Mondal and Joy Mondal, on the wee hours of Sunday with a heavy object. They were allegedly trying to carry it somewhere on a bicycle but were unable to do so and the object, which was later found to be Sampa's body, fell on the ground.

As soon as the body fell from the bicycle, Joy fled the scene. But Riya was seen roaming on the deserted street and trying to call someone.

Based on the neighbour's statement, police detained Riya and Joy. Later, they also detained Sampa's husband, who works as a security guard. During interrogation, Riya broke down and confessed that she along with her husband had killed her mother.

Sources informed that the relation between Sampa, Riya and Joy was bitter. Approximately a year ago, Riya married Joy after fleeing from her house. As Joy did not earn regularly, they used to stay with Sampa and Bhupal. Due to this, altercations frequently broke out between Sampa and her daughter along with Joy.

She along with her husband strangled Sampa to death and later her throat was slit to confirm the death. After confessing to the crime, the duo was arrested. Bhupal is still detained for questioning regarding his location at the time of murder.
