Woman's charred body found, kin allege dowry death

A 24-year-old housewife was allegedly burnt to death by her husband and in-laws at Howrah Basantapur under the jurisdiction of Amta Police station.

The victim Pinki Hazra's family members lodged a complaint against her in-laws on Tuesday claiming that she was burnt to death.

Police said, the victim was a resident of Amta's Hazrapara. She was married to Basantapur's Mintu Roy a few months ago. Mintu's family demanded Rs 1 lakh cash as dowry. The victim's father gave the money to Mintu's parents.

But Mintu recently demanded another Rs 1 lakh for starting his own business venture at his residence but Pinki's father could not arrange the money this time.

"Pinki was not given food and was beaten up several times for the last three-four days. On Tuesday morning, the family members of the victim were called up at her in-laws' residence. They found the charred body of their daughter there," said a police officer.

Although Mintu's family members claimed that Pinki committed suicide, her parents were not ready to accept this statement.

"We lodged an FIR with the Amta police station. They killed our daughter by setting her on fire," said the father of the victim girl.

The neighbours also reached the Amta police station to support Pinki's parents.

"We know that the girl was killed by her in-laws. We have informed the investigators that she was being repeatedly tortured by her husband for money," said a neighbour.
