Woman, son die after being hit by train

Kolkata: A middle-aged woman and her son were killed after being hit by a train at Bagnan station in Howrah on Thursday morning.
Police said the accident happened as the woman, Salma Begum, all of a sudden attempted to cross the tracks with her son on her shoulder.
People, who witnessed the accident, told police, that the woman's original residence was at Chandrapur and the incident took place when she was going to her in-law's house at Antali.
Police came to know that she was standing on the platform with her son for a long time. All of a sudden she decided to cross the railway tracks without noticing that a Mecheda Local was entering the platform.
It was too late when the loco pilot saw the woman with her son and couldn't stop the train despite applying brakes.
People who were on the platform had also shouted to alert the woman as they saw the train approaching the station. But she continued walking on the tracks as if she couldn't hear anyone's call. The woman died on spot after being hit by the train. The bodies were sent for an autopsy. Police contacted the woman's family members, who told police that she often used to return to her in-law's house alone with her son. But somehow she did the mistake of crossing the tracks without noticing the approaching train on Thursday and it claimed both of their lives.
