Woman sexually harassed at her apartment, accused held

Kolkata: A middle-aged man was arrested on charges of molesting a woman after forcefully getting inside her residence in Salt Lake on Monday.

Though police are yet to ascertain the exact reason behind the incident, they suspect that an old rivalry led to the crime.

Police said the accused resides in the same locality where the incident took place.

A police officer said it was a well-planned crime. After preliminary investigation, police suspect that the accused had been keeping a watch on the house of the victim and he forcefully entered the house when there was no one apart from the woman and her daughter.

He had managed to enter the house by scaling the boundary wall. Before the woman could understand anything, the man started harassing her. The accused had even threatened the complainant with dire consequences.

The victim's daughter started shouting for help when she saw that the accused was harassing her mother.

Locals entered the house listening to her cry for help. But the accused managed to flee. He fled realising that he would get caught as locals were approaching.

The victim's family members sought help of the police. Policemen from Bidhannagar South police station rushed to the spot and took statement of the victim

and her daughter.

Based on their complaint, police arrested the accused and initiated a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on charges of molestation and criminal intimidation.

They are also trying to know whether he had committed a similar crime earlier. Cops are trying to ascertain the exact reason behind the attack on the woman.
