Woman severely injured in acid attack

Kolkata: A woman was badly injured after some miscreants hurled acid at her on late Saturday night.
The incident occurred at Hooghly's Hindmotor triggering tension in the area. The victim, the wife of a local goldsmith was attacked by two unidentified miscreants. One of them threw acid on the victim when she was returning home after closing the jewellery shop.
It was learnt that the victim and her husband, Asim Karmakar used to run a jewellery shop at Bottala area adjacent to the Hindmotor railway station for many years. At around 11 pm on Saturday, the woman was returning home after closing the shop. Her house is not too far from the shop. When the victim was walking home, she found that a man with his face covered was coming towards her. After coming close to the victim, the accused hurled acid on her.
According to the victim, the accused was sitting on a motorcycle which was parked by the side of the road. There was another person who was accompanying the accused, who also had his face covered.
After hearing the screams of the victim, the local people rushed to the spot and rescued her. She was taken to a nearby hospital with some burn injuries on her body. The victim told the police that one of the accused suddenly came towards her and hurled acid on her. The accused had fled the spot before the local people reached there.
The victim's husband has registered a compliant at the local police station on the basis of which a probe has been started. The victim also received burn injuries on her hands and legs. It was learnt that a few months ago, some miscreants looted the valuables from the jewellery shop by damaging the lock with acid.
The owners, however, did not lodge any police compliant. According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that accused might have been acquainted with the victim's family members.
