Woman nabbed while trafficking infant

Kolkata: A woman was detained on suspicion that she was attempting to traffic a five-month-old baby. She was caught red-handed while travelling in down Sealdah-Canning Local on Wednesday morning.
Police said that the woman had boarded the train at Champahati railway station. She was carrying the baby on her lap and it was covered with pieces of cloth.
The baby had started to cry since the woman had boarded the train and had been continuously crying for around 15 to 20 minutes.
The woman had failed to make the baby quiet, despite trying a lot and it had led to the suspicion of other passengers. They asked the woman several questions, but were not satisfied with the answers given by the woman.
Following this, the suspicious passengers called the police when the train stopped in the next station and handed over the woman along with the baby to the police after they arrived at the spot.
Sources said that the woman told police that she is the baby's grandmother. However, the police didn't let her go and started a probe into the incident to ascertain whether the woman was really the baby's grandmother or a member of any child trafficking racket.
It may be mentioned that a series of incidents of child lifting and trafficking have taken place in certain parts of South 24-Parganas district in recent times and it has made the people of the area cautious.
Thus nowadays they take immediate action and inform the police in case they find anyone moving around a place suspiciously.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had busted a major child trafficking racket a few months ago and some people from South 24-Parganas were also arrested for their involvement in it.
