Woman dead, husband & kids injured in road mishap

Kolkata: A 25-year-old woman was killed and her husband and two children were severely injured after they were hit by a speeding truck.

The incident took place on National Highway 34 at Sagardighi area of Murshidabad on Sunday.

The incident led to traffic congestion on the National Highway 34 for sometimes. The police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

Police said that Saraswati Mondal (25), a resident of Koirali village of Sagardighi, who was riding pillion on a motorcycle with her daughter Jayanti and son Meghraj was declared brought dead after being taken to a nearby hospital. Her husband Ujjal Mondal and two children suffered serious injuries in various parts of their bodies. Saraswti was going to her younger sister's house at Nabagram when the accident occurred.

When they were crossing Ratanpur area on National Highway 34, a loaded truck hit their motorcycle from behind. All the victims were found lying on the road and bleeding profusely.

The truck driver fled from the spot leaving the vehicle at the spot. The local residents rushed the victims to the hospital where the woman was declared brought dead.

The injured victims were later shifted to the Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital as their condition deteriorated. After being informed the police reached the spot. They are yet to ascertain how the accident took place. They have seized the truck. The bike the victims were riding on had been completely damaged in the accident.

According to the preliminary investigation police suspect that the truck was running at a high speed as a result the driver could not control the vehicle. The other vehicles remained stranded on the national highway for 34 for an hour.

The police are conducting raids to nab the truck driver. Police have started a detailed probe.
