Woman commits suicide; kin blames boyfriend, his father

Kolkata: Mystery shrouds the death of a 26-year-old Sanchita Chatterjee, a homeopathy student whose body was found inside her house at Howrah's Liluah late Monday night.

The family members of the victim have alleged that she committed suicide following a huge psychological pressure by the father of her boyfriend. Sanchita, a student of a homeopathy college in Howrah developed a relationship with Kaushik Roy, a resident of Kanchrapara in North 24 Parganas a few months ago. Kaushik is studying MBBS at the NRS Medical College and Hospital. The family members of the victim lodged a complaint against Kaushik and his father at the Liluah police station accusing them of instigating the victim to commit suicide.

It has been alleged that Kaushik's father has been threatening the victim to end the relationship otherwise she would face dire consequences. After failing to bear tremendous psychological pressure, the victim committed suicide by consuming sleeping pills, alleged her family members. Sanchita's father was not financially stable which is why the Kaushik's father did not accept the relationship as the latter belonged to an affluent family. The couple used to visit each other's house, the family members of the girl told the police.

Kaushik's father used to call up Sanchita repeatedly and ask her to discontinue the relationship as a result of which she was under depression, alleged the victim's family members. They also said that they could never expect that she could take such a drastic step.

On Monday night, the victim consumed some sleeping pills. Her family members initially thought that she might have fallen ill. They did not understand that she swallowed sleeping pills. After that she received a telephone call. While talking over the phone, the girl became unconscious and fell on the ground. The family members rushed her to the Howrah district hospital where the doctors declared her brought dead. Her body has been sent for the post-mortem.

Police have started a probe in this regard on the basis of specific compliant. They are examining the mobile phone of the victim.
