WBPCB hands out eco-friendly paints to idol-makers

Kolkata: West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB), along with Kumartuli Association and Berger Paints India, provided eco-friendly Berger products to idol-makers at two different parts of the city.

Kalyan Rudra, chairman, WBPCB, chaired the event at Paribesh Bhavan, while Shashi Panja, Minister of State for Women & Child Development and Social Welfare department, along with Abhijit Roy, MD & CEO of Berger Paints India, were present at Kumartuli Park to support the cause.

Traditionally, artisans use low quality solvent-based paints to give the gloss finish to the idols. These paints typically have high levels of heavy metal composition, which harms the aquatic ecosystem upon being immersed in water bodies.

Gradually, these poisons find their way into the human food cycle. These traditional methods are also harmful to the artisan's health.

To provide an eco-friendly and user-friendly substitute to the solvent paints, the paint major introduced their range of water-based PU coatings to the artisan fraternity at Kumartuli – one of their major hubs.

The initiative promotes the usage of environmentally safer paints to reduce the risk of water pollution. Berger Paints products are free from added lead, chromium and mercury, which are known threats to health and environment. The company has always been socially responsible and strongly believes in practicing sustainable initiatives.
