Visva Bharati University student found dead in hostel room

Kolkata: The body of a second-year student was found in a room at a hostel in Visva Bharati University on Saturday. It is suspected that the student committed suicide. Probe is on to find out the exact cause of the death.

According to a source, the deceased identified as Partha Das (19) was a second-year Mathematics Honours student. Das, a resident of Rampurhat in Birbhum, studied at the university since childhood. After joining the under-graduate programme at the varsity, he started staying at the Nandan hostel of the university.

A few days ago, Das went home to visit his parents. He came back to the hostel on Friday. On Saturday morning, his roommate went to have breakfast and asked Das to join him but he allegedly refused. Das reportedly told his roommate that he would not have breakfast. His roommate went to have breakfast alone. After he returned to the room he found the door was locked from inside. Despite repeated knocks on the door, Das did not respond. Having no other choice, students of the hostel broke open the door and found Das was hanging from the ceiling fan. Immediately, he was brought down and rushed to the university health centre where he was declared brought dead by the doctor.

Later, the police was informed about the incident. According to his roommate and other students, there were no signs of any unusual behaviour in Das which could create doubt in the students' mind that he was about to take any extreme step. His family members are being questioned for any possible clue. No foul play has been detected in the case so far.
