Varsity on teachers' training comes up with courses on education and sports
Kolkata: The West Bengal University of Teachers' Training, Education Planning and Administration (WBUTTEP&A) popularly known as B.Ed university is all set to break the traditional belief of being an institution catering only to teachers' training and education. Come July and the university is all set to start two new post graduate courses — one in Educational Planning and Administration and another in Sports Science.
"Our university will be the first in the country to offer Masters degree in Educational Planning and Administration . The National Institute of Education Planning and Administration ( NIEPA) is the only other institute in the country that offers diploma courses, M.Phil and Phd in the subject. However, NIEPA alone cannot cater to the demand of the students and particularly those from the north eastern states. Our aim is to train manpower that can provide leadership in the education sector that is relevant for 21st century," said Soma Bandyopadhyay, vice chancellor of the university.
Elaborating on the necessity of such a course, she maintained that proper curriculum planning and administration is of utmost importance for the image or brand of an institution.
Speaking about the PG course on Sports Science, a senior university official said that with different types of sporting events being held across the country and the globe, a professional with thorough knowledge and understanding of sports science and management is very much in demand. The course is being designed in a manner to churn out experts in this field.
"Physical Education and Yoga is taught in a number of institutions across the country. But there is hardly any institution in the state that has a PG curriculum in Sports Science and management," the official added.
There are as many as 446 colleges under the university and the majority of them have physical education as a subject at the under-graduate level. A student graduating with physical education and yoga is eligible to apply for this course.
Bandyoapdhyay, who had served as director of IISWBM before her tryst in WBUTTEP&A, had seen that PG diploma course in sports Management in the institute was very popular. "We are now preparing the draft for the courses. Both the courses are being designed in a job-oriented manner. Both the courses will have 40 seats to begin with," the official added. The university that started functioning on January 2015 with the initiative of the Mamata Banerjee government has ushered in a uniform curriculum at all the B.Ed institutions and contributed in reducing the fake or unaffiliated B. Ed colleges in the state.
