Unnatural death of youth in Jadavpur stirs up protests

Kolkata: Tension erupted in Jadavpur in South 24-Parganas following the unnatural death of a youth late night on Sunday.
Locals staged a demonstration alleging police inaction against selling of drugs in the area. They claimed that the youth became a drug addict and it forced him to commit suicide.
It was around 11 am on Sunday when chaos spread across after the news of the youth's death. The victim's neighbours and locals came out on Golam Mohammad Shah Road and started staging protests.
The situation turned worse when policemen from Jadavpur police station went to the spot. Locals attacked policemen and as the latter was outnumbered they had to run away.
One of the policemen took shelter in a nearby flat. They even entered the apartment and manhandled the policeman.
The locals managed to locate the shop and set it on fire. They even attempted to damage some more property in the area. But they failed as more policemen had reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
Subsequently, a large contingent of police was pressed into service to bring the situation under control.
In a bid to disperse the mob, they chased them by raising lathis and brought the situation under control.
Police pickets have been set up in the area to avoid further deterioration of the law and order situation.
Police picked up the owner of the shop Chobi Das and her daughter-in-law Khuku in this connection.
Locals alleged that the shop that was being run by Chobi was a tea stall. But she also used to sale drugs from the tea stall.
A section of youth have become addicted to drugs in the past few months with its easy availability
in the area.
Initially, locals didn't understand the reason behind so many youth turning up at the tea stall almost every day in between 6 pm to 9 pm. Later, they came to know that the shop owner was selling drugs and as a result some youth from the area were getting addicted to it.
On Sunday night, locals claimed that the victim had also became addicted to drugs and committed suicide as he was mentally disturbed for not having enough money to buy the same.
