Two youth killed as truck runs them over

Kolkata: In a tragic incident, two youth were killed after getting crushed under the wheels of a speeding truck.

The accident took place near Murgashol area of Asansol on GT road in the wee hours of Sunday. The deceased have been identified as Sonu Raut and Sikandar Bhunia. Both the victims were residents of Dildar Nagar area of Asansol.

The victims were riding a motorcycle along the GT Road when a speeding truck hit them. According to the local people, the accident took place when they were trying to cross the road on the bike. The bikers did not see the speeding truck coming from behind. The driver of the truck could not control the vehicle and the two victims were crushed under its wheels. The accident disrupted the traffic movement in the area. Police said that the preliminary investigation suggests that the truck was going at top speed. As the bikers took a sudden turn, the truck coming from the behind ran over them. The local residents said that the bike was also going at high speed.

The truck driver fled the spot leaving the vehicle. The local residents and police rushed the two bikers to the hospital where they were declared brought dead. The bodies were sent for the post-mortem. The local residents said that the bikers and the vehicles often over-speed resulting in road accidents. They also demanded the police to conduct surveillance from time to time in order to crack down on the vehicles that flout the traffic norms. Police have already seized the vehicle.

As a result of the incident, a huge traffic jam was created on National Highway 6. Senior police officers rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Police are conducting raids to nab the truck driver.
