Two suffer bullet injuries in Panchayat poll violence

Kolkata: A sub-inspector of police in South 24-Parganas and a Trinammool Congress candidate contesting Panchayat elections from Nadia's Chakda suffered bullet injuries in two separate incidents.
The police officer was injured in Usti area of South 24-Parganas when filing of nominations was going on in the area on Monday morning. The incident triggered tension in the area. It occurred when some miscreants were hurling bombs in the area and firing bullets to disrupt the process of nominations.
The victim, SI Rafikujjaman along with some other police officers rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. It was alleged that miscreants initially pelted stones at the policemen.
They later hurled bombs and fired a few rounds to terrorise locals. The victim suffered a bullet injury during the incident. The incident, however, did not have any impact on the nomination process. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where he is undergoing treatment. His condition is stated to be serious.
In the other incident, a Trinamool Congress candidate from Nadia sustained bullet injuries when some miscreants shot at him. The victim, Ashim Biswas, a Trinamool Congress candidate contesting Panchayat poll from Chakdah was returning home riding his motorcycle from a rally when some unidentified miscreants stopped his way and shot at him from a close quarter. A bullet grazed his body.
The miscreants fled the spot after locals came to his rescue. He was taken to a hospital for treatment. His condition is stated to be stable now.
