Two killed, six injured in separate road accidents

Kolkata: Two youth have been killed after the motorcycle they were riding was hit by a speeding bus.
The incident took place in Banganagar area of Diamond Harbour in South 24-Parganas on Wednesday morning. Police have arrested the bus driver and seized the vehicle. The incident caused traffic congestion on National Highway 117.
Police said the incident took place at around 11.30 am on Wednesday when a private bus of SD 18 route hit the riders. The bus was carrying passengers to the city from Diamond Harbour when the driver lost control over the vehicle.
Police said the two victims were crossing the road at Banganagar More on a motorcycle when they were hit by the speeding bus. Although the driver applied a sudden brake, he failed to avert the accident. Both the victims were crushed under the front wheels of the vehicle.
Some locals rushed the victims to a nearby hospital where they were declared brought dead.
Police sent the bodies for postmortem. The eyewitnesses told police that the bus was running at a high speed as a result of which the driver could not control the vehicle.
The locals managed to get hold of the accused bus driver who tried to flee immediately after the accident.
He was later handed over to the police. As the incident took place in the busy hours it led to huge traffic congestion on National Highway 117. Vehicles remained stranded for some time. Senior police officers rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control nearly after one hour.
The traffic movement was also restored after the police removed the bus from the site. A probe has been initiated in this regard.
In another incident, six persons including some women have been injured when an autorickshaw they were travelling in hit a roadside tree and overturned and fell on a roadside ditch. The locals alleged that the autorickshaw was running at a high speed when the accident took place.
Among the injured two are stated to be critical. All the injured passengers were rushed to Barasat District Hospital.
Locals set the auto-rickshaw on fire after the accident.
