Two hotel owners get 5-yr RI in stale meat case

Kolkata: Two hotel owners, who had been arrested in connection with the stale meat case, have been sentenced to 5 years of rigorous imprisonment by the Bongaon sub court.

Bidyut Roy, additional district judge (1) sentenced Debabrata Das and Swarup Sen to 5 years of rigorous imprisonment on Wednesday. Both Das and Sen were on bail. The judge acquitted 6 persons arrested in connection with the stale meat case.

On 19 April, 2018 Diamond Harbour district police begun investigation into the stale meat case. Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to probe into the matter. SIT arrested 12 persons in connection with the stale meat case including its kingpin "Mangsho Bishu."

Cases of eateries using stale meat were reported from various parts of North 24-Parganas and South 24-Parganas. Municipalities of these areas and Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) had conducted drives in the markets to seize stale meat.

However, out of these 12 persons arrested in connection with the case, 10 persons, including the kingpin, got bail as the police could not prove the charges against them. The accused will have to pay penalty worth Rs 1 lakh. The court took one year to pronounce the judgment.
