Two helmetless youths killed in accident, car runs over woman

Kolkata: Two helmetless bikers were killed in a road accident in the city, while a woman died after being hit by a car, prompting the local residents to stage a demonstration in Asansol.
The first incident took place near Science City on Tuesday night, when two youths were riding a motorcycle. According to the police, the victims, aged between 21-25, were riding the bike at a high speed.
On their way towards Science City from Topsia, the bike skidded, as a result of which both the youths fell on the road, resulting in serious injuries to their heads.
According to the police, one Kalim was riding the bike, while his friend Warsi was riding as the pillion. Police suspect that the bike might have skidded after the rider applied sudden brake.
Warsi died at the spot while Kalim succumbed to his injuries after being taken to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital. Police have started a probe in this regard. They are yet to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
In another incident, a woman was killed after being hit by a car while crossing a road at Hirapur area of Asansol on Wednesday morning. It was alleged that a senior official of a steel plant was travelling in the car that knocked the woman down.
The victim, identified as Subhadra Mali, was taken to a nearby hospital after the incident. The doctors at the hospital announced the victim brought dead. The incident has triggered tension as the local residents staged a demonstration in the area.
It also led to traffic congestion in the area. They tried to ransack the vehicle. The local residents also blocked the road with a tree. Senior police officers reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
Traffic movement was resumed following the intervention of the police officers.
