Two held with firearms during raid in Chinsurah

Kolkata: Two persons were arrested with firearms from Chinsurah in Hooghly in the wee hours on Sunday during a special raid in the run up of the Bhadreswar Municipality Chairman murder case.
Acting on a tip off, a team comprising officers from Chinsurah police station conducted a raid and arrested the accused. They were found carrying illegal firearms and failed to give any satisfactory answer when police asked them the reason behind their possession of the same.
Police suspect that the accused had plans to sell the firearms and they were caught when they were heading to hand it over to someone in the area.
It may be recalled that just a few days ago, chairman of Bhadreswar Municipality Manoj Upadhyay was shot dead from point-blank range when he was returning home at night.
The police have bolstered vigil in the area since the incident took place. They have also arrested three people involved in different anti-social activities, from Rishra in Hooghly on Saturday.
Police recovered firearms and bombs from the accused. They were arrested when they had assembled with a plan to commit a crime.
The police are interrogating the accused to know from where they had managed to get the firearms and what their exact motive was.
Police suspect that they had assembled to attack someone or to conduct a robbery in the house of a local trader.
