Two detained for vandalising CU hostel

Kolkata: A group of unknown miscreants suddenly barged inside at Calcutta University hostel under Bowbazar police station area and ransacked furniture.
A boarder who tried to resist, injured his right hand when he was hit by a hammer by the miscreants who were around 10 in number.
Only a few boarders were inside the hostel when the incident occurred and the security guard was also beaten up.
An eyewitness said that one of the attackers claimed that they have got directions from the court to vacate the hostel while another claimed that he was the owner of the land where the hostel was located.
Senior officials of Calcutta University including Vice-Chancellor Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee and Registrar Rajgopal Dhar Chakraborty rushed to the spot and assured the boarders of taking measures for preventing such unprecedented incidents in future.
There are 24 boarders in the hostel and all of them are pursuing post graduation.
"We were not aware of any such notice of release or likewise. The police will investigate the entire incident and take steps accordingly," a senior official of Calcutta University said.
The Bowbazar police station has started a probe and has detained two persons in this connection.
Meanwhile, in another development in the administrative level in Calcutta University, Prof Minakshi Roy has assumed charge as the pro Vice-Chancellor of the institution. Roy has been serving the Principal of Bhairav Ganguly College of Belgharia.
