Two arrested with Rs 1crore unaccounted cash in Burrabazar

Kolkata: About Rs 1 crore was seized by police officers from Burrabazar on Wednesday night in two raids and three persons were arrested in this connection.

According to a source, on Wednesday afternoon, officers of Burrabazar police station got a tip-off that a few persons had come to Burrabazar and they had a huge amount of money with them.

Working on the information, around 2:30pm, officers intercepted two persons identified as Kunal Kumar of Begusarai and Rahul Kumar of Khagaria in Bihar at the crossing of Mir Bhahar Ghat Road and Strand Road. The duo were carrying two bags. During frisking sleuths found a lot of money which they had kept inside the bag.

Kunal and Rahul were detained and taken to the police station. After counting the police officers came to know that the duo were carrying Rs 65 lakh inside the bag. Later, the duo was asked to produce valid documents to support the possession of the cash. When they could not provide valid documents both of them were arrested.

This apart, the cops were tip-off about another suspicious person who also reportedly carried a lot of unaccounted cash. Police reached Strand Road and intercepted a person identified as Mohan Agarwal of Baguihati with a bag. When Agarwal was asked to open the bag he refused. The police opened the bag and found a lot of money in it.

Agarwal was detained and taken to the police station. After counting police officers came to know that he was carrying approximately Rs 35 lakh. Agarwal also asked to provide documents to substantiate the possession of the cash. As he couldn't provide the documents he was also arrested. Two separate cases have been lodged at the Burrabazar police station.

Information of the recovery of money has been conveyed to the Income Tax department. Sleuths are probing to find if these cases have in any hawala connection.

During the past few months a huge amount of unaccounted money was seized across the city at various police stations. Most of the seizure was made during naka checking in North Kolkata. Information regarding the recoveries was conveyed to the Income Tax Department and the Election Commission.
