Kolkata: A television actress allegedly misbehaved with a traffic sergeant after she was intercepted for flouting traffic rules at the Science City crossing on Eastern Metropolitan Bypass on Friday late afternoon.
The actress Moumita Chakraborty who was on the wheels was speeding with her car and violated the crossing at Science City and sped away towards Kasba connector.
The on-duty traffic sergeant Biswajit Bairagi of Tiljala Traffic Guard who was on duty at the crossing chased the vehicle and intercepted it near the Trinamool Congress party office." The car was trying to flee away after disobeying the traffic signal. Realising that she was being chased, she started driving the car in a more reckless manner which could have easily resulted in an accident," a senior official of the Kolkata Police's traffic department said.
However after Bairagi intercepted the car and asked for the driving license, she could not produce any and claimed herself to be influential. She was drunk and was talking in a rough manner. She also threatened the sergeant of dire consequences.
Soon some other police officials, including lady police reached the spot and the actress, along with her vehicle, was taken to Pragati Maidan Police station under whose jurisdiction the things happened.
On the basis of Bairagi's complaint of traffic law violation followed by alleged misbehavior, the actress was arrested.
In recent times there have been a number of incidents of traffic violation when traffic personnel have been manhandled. "However as the cases that are slapped against such behaviour are mostly bailable as per sections of law, the offenders get bail easily," a senior official of the traffic
department said.
Rash driving has already claimed significant amount of lives in the city, most notably that of model Sonika Chauhan who passed away in a fatal car crash while travelling with actor Bikram Chatterjee.
The car hit the divider and climbed on the pavement on Rashbehari Avenue. Bystanders who heard the crashing noise rushed to the spot and brought the couple out of the car, a Toyota Corolla Altis, which had been completely wrecked in the accident.
