Truck runs over on-duty cop on Dum Dum Road, Civic Volunteer injured

Kolkata: An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Cossipore police station died after a truck ran him over while he was performing patrolling duty on Dum Dum Road near Chiria More, early on Thursday morning. The rider of the bike, who is a Civic Volunteer (CV), was also injured.

According to local residents, ASI Bireswar Roy (45) and CV Subhojit Chandra of Cossipore police station were performing patrolling duty on a bike early on Thursday morning. Roy was sitting on the pillion seat and Chandra was riding the bike.

Near Chiria More crossing on Dum Dum Road, a portion was kept in partially dug condition, as work of pipeline was ongoing at that place.

At around 5:15 am, Chandra reached the spot and was about to get down from the bike after parking it at the side of the road. At the same time, a truck bearing registration number WB76A5790 coming from Dum Dum hit Roy and Chandra and went over the bike as well.

Immediately, local residents ran to the spot and saw Roy lying on the road and bleeding profusely from his head. He, along with Chandra was rushed to R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, where Roy was declared brought dead.

Chandra had sustained a minor injury on his leg and was discharged after treatment. It has been alleged that the truck driver had lost control over the steering while trying to avoid the portion of the road which was dug for pipeline work.

Meanwhile, locals detained the truck driver and informed Chitpur police station as the spot of the accident falls under its jurisdiction. Later, police went to the spot, arrested the truck driver and seized the vehicle.
