Truck mows down 2 bikers on NH 34, 5 cops injured in fracas with mob

Kolkata: Five policemen were injured in a clash that broke out between a mob and the police, following a road accident in which two bikers were killed, with another injured.
The accident took place at Chowringhee More area under Kaliachawk police station on National Highway 34, early on Tuesday morning, when two bikers were crushed under the wheels of a speeding truck. The truck driver mowed down the victims while trying to evade arrest during a routine checking.
Local residents put up a road block, alleging that lack in checking of vehicles often lead to road accidents on National Highway 34. The incident turned violent when a mob clashed with the police, when the latter tried to lift the road block that created a huge traffic jam in the area.
The mob also ransacked two police vehicles parked in the area. The irate mob also pushed two other police vehicles into a roadside ditch.
When the policemen tried to convince the agitators, they became furious and attacked the policemen. The policemen at the spot were soon overpowered by the mob.
Some of the police officers of the Kaliachawk police station sustained injuries in the incident.
After being informed, a huge contingent of police rushed to the spot. Rapid Action Force was also deployed to bring the situation under control. Police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the mob. They also used tear gas shells.
Some of the local residents were also injured during the incident. A police picket was also set up in the area.
It has been learnt that police were conducting a routine check up along the NH 34 from early Tuesday morning. The victims have been identified as Naimuddin Seikh (28) and Abdul Barek Seikh (22) who were sitting on a stationary motorcycle when they were mowed down by a Farakka-bound truck.
The truck driver tried to flee from the spot along with the vehicle when the two victims came under its wheels. They were rushed to Malda Medical College and Hospital where they were declared brought dead.
Another person, identified as Samed Seikh (38), was injured in the incident. He is undergoing treatment at Malda Medical College and Hospital.
Police have started a probe in this regard. They are yet to arrest anybody in this connection so far. Raids are being conducted to nab the truck driver.
