Trinamool lashes out at BJP over fake membership card of Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress came down heavily upon the BJP on Tuesday, accusing them of engineering the circulation of a fake membership card bearing the name of party supremo Mamata Banerjee, on social media.

"We will take strict and appropriate action against the culprits behind the act, which is an attempt to malign the image of our party chief. We will also lodge a complaint with the cyber crime cell of the police," TMC secretary general Partha Chatterjee said, condemning the act.

Chatterjee displayed a printout of the fake membership card before the reporters that carries a photo of Banerjee on its left. It mentions the "member's" name as Mamata Banerjee and the state as West Bengal. The card, which has Bharatiya Janata Party inscribed on it in a large font with a logo, also shows a membership number.

"They (BJP) have been doing similar acts on Facebook and other social media platforms and spreading false propaganda to misguide people and party members. It is a disgrace that they have stooped so low, trying to tarnish the image of Mamata Banerjee. These are the inauspicious signs of democracy," he said, adding that they are unable to fight Banerjee politically and are thus wrongly using technology for such acts.

It may be mentioned that the saffron party had launched its nationwide membership drive on Saturday, on the birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mukherjee.
