Trinamool activists attacked in Gosaba
Kolkata: As many as ten Trinamool Congress activists were injured, two of them critically, when some miscreants attacked them with weapons.
The incident took place at Gosaba area in South 24-Parganas on Tuesday evening, when the victims were returning home after taking part in a rally. Among the injured victims, Indrajit Mondal and Saidul Tarafdar are stated to be in critical condition. They have been undergoing treatment at the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH). They had received serious head injuries in the incident.
The district Trinamool Congress leaders alleged that BJP backed goons attacked the victims while returning home. The BJP leaders from the district, however, denied the allegation and termed it to be the result of an intra-party clash between two groups of Trinamool Congress.
Police said that Trinamool Congress activists had taken out a rally at Birajnagar area of Gosaba in South 24-Parganas on Tuesday evening. After the meeting got over, the Trinamool Congress activists were returning home, when some miscreants came to the area and attacked them with weapons.
The screams of the injured victims attracted the attention of the local residents. However, the assailants had fled from the spot, before the local people reached there. The injured victims were rushed to Gosaba Block Health Centre.
Two victims were later shifted to Canning Sub-Divisional Hospital. As their health condition deteriorated later in the night, they were shifted to CNMCH.
Local Trinamool Congress leaders alleged that BJP backed miscreants were trying to terrorise their party workers, ahead of the Panchayat election.
"It was a deliberate attempt of BJP to weaken our party organization, by attacking the active workers," alleged a district Trinamool Congress leader.
The incident has spread tension in the village. A police picket was set up in the area. Police have started a probe in this regard and are conducting raids to nab the culprits.
