Trinamool activist lynched at Dinhata

Kolkata: A Trinamool Congress activist was lynched by some unidentified miscreants at Dinhata in Cooch Behar district on Wednesday night. The incident has sparked tension among the local residents.

It occurred a few hours before Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the relatives of the slain Trinamool Congress activist in North 24-Parganas' Nimta on Thursday evening.

Trinamool Congress leaders from Cooch Behar alleged that BJP-backed goons were involved in the crime. The victim has been identified as Azizar Rahman. He was an active member of the party and had been instrumental in strengthening organisation of the party in the district.

A resident of Borodanga village, Rahman was a booth committee member of the party. On Wednesday night, he was returning home on his motorcycle when some miscreants stopped his way near Petla Bazar area.

He was forced to get down from his bike, following which a group of armed miscreants started beating up the victim indiscriminately. Some local residents rushed to the spot soon after hearing the screams of the victim.

They took the victim to a nearby hospital, where the victim succumbed to his injuries. The miscreants managed to flee from the spot before the local people could reach there.

The district Trinamool Congress leaders have accused a local BJP leader for his alleged involvement in the incident. Police have started a case in this regard. They are conducting raids to nab the culprits. The district police are yet to ascertain if it was a political murder or any past rivalry had led to the incident.
