Treasure trove: KMC unveils online archive of information about Kolkata & its history

Kolkata: Now everyone will be able to access authentic information about Kolkata and its history from any part of the globe by a simple mouse click.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has unveiled the website of its archive www.kmcarchive.in to enable people across the world gather information about the City of Joy simply by logging onto the website.

The website was inaugurated by Mayor Firhad Hakim on Saturday. "KMC is the only municipal corporation in the country that has an archive of its own. The website of the archive is surely a new feather in the cap of the civic body," Hakim said.

The website will be of immense benefit to those who want to pursue research activities about Kolkata and how it has evolved through the passage of time.

It contains information about the Mayors of Kolkata since its inception, their works for the development of the city, the similarity between the residences of the United Kingdom and Kolkata, how the city was founded and so on.

"If somebody wants to

have additional information about any specific content

in the website, he/she would have to write an e-mail and necessary input will be provided," a senior official of the civic body said.

It may be mentioned that people from different parts of the world have a curiosity about Kolkata's history and heritage. There have been instances of researchers from Boston, Cambridge, Oxford and other universities coming to the civic body's archive section, seeking information about the city.

"Now, people don't need to come physically. Information can be accessed right from their homes at the click of a mouse," the official maintained.

The archive section has set a target of uploading information about nearly one lakh subjects related to Kolkata on its website.

The archive of KMC had started its journey on February 3, 2015. It has been named after scholar Amol Home, the first editor of the Calcutta Municipal Gazette, the publication of which started on November 15, 1924.

The archive contains documents, charts, maps, drawings and paintings of early Calcutta, various articles like history books on Kolkata, photographs of persons and places of interest, newspapers, street list (1889 - 2014), civic receptions, list of heritage buildings, etc.
