Trader found killed in Malda; wife and brothers detained

The police on Friday recovered the body of a businessman with marks of external injury from his residence at Kaliachak in Malda.

The incident sparked a palpable tension in the area. The businessman was identified as one Hamidul Rahaman (25). who was engaged in poultry business.

The police detained three persons — Hamidul's wife and two brothers. Meanwhile, no complaint has yet been made to the police.

The police said the deceased used to do business in Sujapur. His spouse and only son had recently gone to his in-laws house.

He was alone in the house. Last night, he took his dinner and retired to bed. Local people informed police after he did not open the door. Hamidul was known to be an early riser.

The police arrived at the spot and found the door of his bedroom open and the body of Hamidul lying on the bed in a pool of blood. There were external marks of injury particularly around his neck, chest and arms. His body was sent for post-mortem.

The police said family feud might have led to his murder. For quite some time he was having problem with his brother over a plot of land. The police also recovered some packets of brown sugar from his bedroom.

The police are not sure whether he used to consume brown sugar or the miscreants had used it to eliminate him. The police interrogated some of his neighbours who told them that Hamidul was well behaved and had cordial relations with the neighbours.

The criminals had broken the main entrance of the house and preliminary investigation suggested that they had throttled him to death and then slashed him with some sharp weapon. However, the police are yet to find out the exact number of criminals who had entered his house.

Senior officers said raids were on to trace the miscreants and also said that all the police stations in Malda have been informed.
