Too engrossed in his cell phone, youth gets crushed by train

Kolkata: A 27-year-old youth was mowed down by a long distance train near Panskura station on Monday night when he was engrossed in his cell phone while walking along the railway track.
This occurred at a time when the state government has taken up an extensive campaign against the use of mobile phones while driving vehicles.
Campaigns have been conducted in various places in the state making people aware against the use of ear phones while crossing roads. Efforts fell flat as they failed to check such incidents.
Police said the victim, Ram Pal (27) was a driver of a pickup van. Pal who was originally hailing from Mushibani area of Ghatshila was living in the Panskura area. He drove the vegetable laded vehicle from Dhulagrah to Panskura on Monday evening.
According to the railway police, the victim was going to meet one of his friends after parking the vehicle at the nearby market place. He was walking along the track to reach Panskura station where his friend
was waiting.
Pal was glued to his mobile phone probably conversing with someone while walking along the railway track. As a result of which he could not properly hear the horn of the train coming
from behind.
According to the railway police, the victim was walking along track number 5 when Down Paradip-Santrgachi Superfast Express mowed him down. After being hit by the speeding train, the victim fell on track number 6.
Railway police personnel rushed to the spot and found the body of the victim who died at the spot.
The body was later taken to Tomluk
District Hospital for post-mortem examination. Police suspect that the victim was in a hu rry as a result of which he was walking along the track to reach the station instead of taking over bridge.
A probe has been initiated in this regard.
