Toddler dies after falling in high drain in Taratala

Kolkata: A two-and-a-half-year-old child of Goragacha Road in Taratala died after falling into an open drain adjacent to the hutment where she lived with her parents. Aliya Turia's body was found floating in the high drain close to her house.
"There is no external mark of injury on the child's body. Prima facie it appears that the child fell down there. We have received no compliant as yet. The body has been sent for post-mortem," Meeraj Khalid, deputy commissioner (South-west) of Kolkata Police said.
Sources said that the child was playing with her younger sister in front of the house at around 9.30 am when her mother Sonia Turia went inside the house for some household chores. She returned after sometime and found that her daughter was missing. The other family members were informed who started searching the surroundings. One of them suddenly spotted the child's hand just above the surface of water in the high drain near the house.
The child was fished out and was taken to Vidyasagar Hospital where she was declared brought dead. The child's parents including the locals alleged that their repeated requests to the local Councillor to cover the open drain has fallen on deaf ears.
There are only a few open drains under the KMC area in the city. "We have been telling our Councillor repeatedly to cover the drain. In these hutments, there are a number of little children who play about. Chances of such incidents are always there," the victim's father Umesh Turia said.
Local Councillor Ram Pyare Ram, however, denied negligence of the civic body behind the death of the child. "The Metro Authorities had dug up the place there for
making pillars that has taken the shape of open drains after water accumulated there due to rain. Work for covering the drains will be taken up from Sunday," he added.
