TMCP factions clash in Barasat

Kolkata: A clash broke out between two groups of students belonging to the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) at Dhrubachand Halder College in Barasat, to establish control over the students' union. The incident has taken place at a time when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has warned of stern action against the students' unions creating trouble in colleges.

The trouble broke out this morning when two groups of students belonging to TMCP assembled at the college premises to take over the union room. They hurled bombs in which four students were injured. They were taken to a local hospital where they were treated.

A large contingent of Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel had been deployed to maintain peace.

The principal of the college said he had contacted the North 24-Parganas district administration and requested them to make arrangements as the college authorities had apprehended trouble.

Calling the incident 'most unfortunate', the principal said such violent attitude by the students is uncalled for. The district administration is keeping a tab on the situation. The police has cordoned off the area. The principal has informed the state Higher Education department about the incident.
