TMC worker shot dead by goons, family demands immediate arrests

Kolkata: A Trinamool Congress worker was shot dead while returning home after attending a party meeting at Kumarganj in Malda on Saturday late night. Senior Trinamool Congress leaders Sashi Panja and Atin Ghosh went to Malda and assured that all sort of support will be extended to the victim's family members.
The victim's family members lodged complaint with the police alleging that CPI(M) and Congress backed goons are behind the crime.
Police said the victim Nayan Mondal, was a resident of Raghunathpur village. He was an active member of Trinamool Congress and was also threatened with dire consequences quite a few times.
Nayan went to attend a party meeting at Ratua block on Sunday night. The meeting was organised in connection with the forth coming Panchayat election.
He was returning all alone on a motorbike after attending the meeting. Four to five miscreants stopped the victimand gheraoed him.
The victim fell on the ground as they pushed him and started beating him up. They opened fire at Nayan when he tried to flee the place to save his life. The bullet hit his head.
Locals came out of their houses hearing the bullet sound. Realising that they would get caught as locals were approaching them, the miscreants started hurling bombs.
The locals could not catch the miscreants as they continued hurling bombs while fleeing the area. They informed the police.
Policemen from Pukhuria Police Station reached the spot and took Nayan to a hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Locals and the victim's family members demanded immediate arrest of the accused.
The victim's family members lodged a complaint with the police against 30 people.
Police conducted raids the entire night at different places and detained 10 people in this connection.
The victim's family members claimed that CPI(M) and Congress backed goons are behind the incident.
They also named some of the leaders who had allegedly chalked out the plan to kill Nayan.
A police officer said a probe has been initiated in this connection.
Senior Trinamool Congress leaders criticised CPI(M) and Congress for the incident.
They also spoke to the bereaved family and assured all necessary support to the family members of the worker of their party.
