TMC worker beaten to death in Bankura

Kolkata: A Trinamool Congress worker was beaten to death at Sarenga in Bankura on Sunday night.

According to sources, on Sunday morning, the deceased Trinamool Congress worker, identified as Purnendu Mohanty, had gone to Piralgari market to buy vegetables.

An altercation broke out between the vegetable seller Achintya Das and Mohanty at the market over the price of a cauliflower.

It was alleged that Das demanded a high price for the vegetable which Mohanty refused to give. However, due to the intervention of local residents the dispute was resolved at that time.

At night, when Mohanty was returning home from work, Das attacked him near Sareshkol area. Das allegedly hit Mohanty on his head repeatedly using an iron rod. When Mohanty fell on the ground bleeding profusely, Das allegedly pushed him into a pond and fled.

Hearing Mohanty screaming for help, local residents rushed him to Sarenga block primary health centre where he was declared brought dead by the attending doctor.

Later, Sarenga police station was informed about the incident.

Late on Sunday night, the police arrested Das on the basis of a complaint lodged by Mohanty's family members. Local residents claim that Mohanty was an active Trinamool Congress worker and was popular in the locality.

Though no political connection has not been established in the incident yet, the police are probing the case to find if the accused had any other motive.

According to the police, it was not normal for anyone to beat someone to death over the price of a cauliflower.

It is suspected that there could be some old rivalry between Mohanty and Das owing to which the accused person took revenge.
