TMC reclaims control over Naihati municipality

Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress retained its control over Naihati municipality by defeating the BJP by 24-0 votes on Wednesday. The election was held in the chamber of Chaitali Chakraborty, District Magistrate of North 24-Parganas amidst tight security.

Apprehending landslide defeat, the BJP councillors did not turn up to take part in the voting to set up the new civic board. With this, the Trinamool Congress retained its control over six municipalities in North 24-Parganas, which had gone under the control of the BJP soon after the result of Lok Sabha election on May 23. These civic bodies are Naihati, Kanchrapara, Garulia, Haringhata, Halisahar and Bongaon.

Trinamool's control over Naihati municipality has sent a clear message to Mukul Roy and BJP MP Arjun Singh that the saffron party is fast losing its control in North 24-Parganas.

When these councillors joined the BJP, the party's national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya had said just as Parliament election in Bengal was held in seven phases, Trinamool leaders will join the BJP in seven phases. However, that has not happened and everywhere local leaders who had joined the BJP from Trinamool are returning to their old fold.
