TMC names candidates for by-polls to 3 Assembly seats

Kolkata: Bimalendu Singh Roy of the Trinamool Congress will contest from Karimpur Assembly constituency in the by-elections which is scheduled to be held on November 25, for which the result will be announced on November 28.

The by-elections in three Assembly seats became necessary after Pramatha Nath Roy Congress MLA from Kaliagunj (SC) seat died some months ago while the MLAs from Karimpur and Kharagpur Sadar, namely Mohua Moitra of the TMC and Dilip Ghosh, state president of the BJP, became MPs.

Partha Chatterjee, secretary general of the TMC announced the list of party nominees on Thursday afternoon. Trinamool leaders Tapan Deb Singha and Pradip Sardar will contest from Kaliagunj and Kharagpur Sadar seats. TMC leaders including Suvendu Adhikari met party supremo Mamata Banerjee on October 28 at her Kalighat residence and finalised the list.

Singh Roy is a popular teacher in the area.

Congress and CPI(M) have inked an alliance and have selected the candidates following a meeting attended by Somen Mitra, PCCI president; Pradip Bhattacharya; Biman Bose, Left Front chairman and Suryakanta Misra, the state CPI(M) secretary.

Golam Rabbi, CPI(M) candidate will fight from Karimpur seat while Congress nominees whose names are yet to be finalised will contest from Kaliagunj and Kharadpur Sadar seats.

Kharagpur Sadar was a Congress stronghold till 2016 Assembly elections when Dilip Ghosh defeated veteran Congress leader Gyan Singh Sohanpal. The names of the BJP candidates have also not been finalised yet.
