Three women come under Namkhana local, die

Kolkata: In a tragic incident, three women were run over by a speeding train at Ukiler Hat station in the Sealdah south section on Friday.
The local residents told the police that all the three victims were carrying loads on their head when they were crossing the Rajnagar level crossing situated close to the Ukiler Hat station. The gate was closed as a train was approaching to the station but these women slipped through a gap beside the level crossing.
The local residents said that the victims were going to a nearby market to sell their produce.
Some of the local people, however, alleged that there was no gate man at the level crossing as a result of which, the accidents happened. Some others, however, said that victims did not look around when they were crossing the railway track. As they were carrying a load of vegetables, they could not turn around and see the approaching the train.
According to the police, the Down Namkhana-Sealdah local was approaching station when the victims came in front of the running train. The victims were run over by the train following which, the local residents staged a demonstration demanding the deployment of a guard at the level crossing.
They alleged that the accident could have been averted if there was a guard at the level crossing. They also said that it was long-standing demand of the local people but no action was taken by the railways in this regard.
The government railway police reached the spot and brought the situation under control after
pacifying the mob. The police recovered the bodies of the victims. They were sent for the post-mortem examination. Police are yet to ascertain the identity of the victims.
