Three killed, one injured as truck mows down auto-rickshaw on Basanti Highway

Kolkata: Three persons were killed and one severely injured in a road accident, in which an unidentified goods vehicle hit an auto-rickshaw near Chowbhaga on Basanti Highway, in the wee hours on Sunday.
The victims include the driver of the auto-rickshaw and fish traders from Chowbhaga area. The accident took place when Sandip Das, Subir Sanpui and Sudarshan Burman were heading to Sealdah Baithakkhana Market in the auto-rickshaw of Bablu Das.
Sandip, Subir and Bablu were declared brought dead, when taken to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital. Sudarshan was admitted to the hospital, where he is fighting for his life.
Police came to know after speaking to some of the people who witnessed the incident, that the auto-rickshaw was hit by a heavy truck. Though they had failed to note down the registration number of the offending vehicle, they told police that it was a heavy truck.
The victims were heading towards Sealdah in the auto-rickshaw and the truck was approaching from the opposite direction. The truck was at a high speed and its driver failed to control the vehicle, upon finding the auto-rickshaw approaching from the opposite direction, resulting in the accident.
After being hit, the auto-rickshaw overturned and rested on the side of the road. The three-wheeler was heavily damaged. The truck, however, managed to flee. Local people informed the police and at the same time, initiated the rescue work.
Police reached the spot and took all four of them to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, where three were declared brought dead and one was admitted with severe injuries.
A police officer said that almost five days a week, Sudarshan, Sandip and Subir used to go to Sealdah to buy fish from the wholesale Baithakkhana Market and they sold the same in a local market at Chowbhaga in Anadapur.
Like all other days, the trio had booked the auto-rickshaw of Bablu and they were heading towards Sealdah at around 3 a.m. on Sunday. The ill-fated auto-rickshaw has been taken to Pragati Maidan police station.
Local people said that the stretch of the road is accident prone and they urged the police to take necessary steps to check road accidents on that stretch, especially at night. The incident led to traffic congestion on the highway. Senior police officers intervened and cleared the jam to ease out traffic movement.
