Three killed in two separate road incidents

KOLKATA: A 55-year-old man was killed after coming under the wheels of a speeding truck.
The incident took place near Akhratala Bridge under Nejjat police station in North 24-Parganas on Sunday night. Police said the victim, identified as Kusum Mollah was riding his bike when he was hit by a truck. Another person who was riding pillion sustained serious injuries in the incident. They were returning home along the Nejjat–Basirhat road.
Police said when they were crossing the Akhratala Bridge in Nejjat, a speeding truck hit them from behind. Mollah fell on the road and the truck went over him. The truck driver soon fled the spot along with the vehicle. The driver left the vehicle a few meters away from the spot and fled.
Locals on Sunday night put up a blockade protesting against rash driving of vehicles. The incident led to huge traffic congestion on the Nejjat–Basirhat
road with loaded trucks stranded in the area. They alleged that police failed to take steps against vehicles that often flout the traffic norms despite repeated pleas.
Senior police officers of the district rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
The demonstration was lifted following the intervention of the senior police officers who assured locals of stringent action that will be taken against vehicles flouting traffic norms.
In a separate incident, two youth on a bike were killed after being hit by a tractor near Bholagachi area of
Itahar in North Dinajpur in the wee hours of Monday. The victims have been identified as Sahadeb Sarkar and Nityananda Sarkar.
Locals rushed them to Itahar primary health centre where they were declared brought dead. Police are conducting raids to nab the tractor driver who has been at large since the accident occurred.
