Three dead in road accident in Malda

Kolkata: Three persons were killed and several others injured when an auto-rickshaw collided head-on with a motorcycle.

According to the local administration, eight persons have been injured in the accident. Of them, four are stated to be in a serious condition. They have been undergoing treatment at Malda Medical College and Hospital. The two deceased persons have been identified as Charan Mondal and Topse Mridha who were travelling in the auto-rickshaw at the time of the accident.

A youth who was riding the motorcycle also succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the hospital. The police are yet to confirm the identity of the motorcyclist.

The incident occurred on the Pakuahat-Bamangola state highway in Malda on Friday night. The locals took part in the rescue operation and shifted the injured victims to a nearby hospital. Those who received critical injuries were later shifted to Malda Medical College and Hospital.

Police said that the auto-rickshaw turned turtle on the road following the accident causing maximum damages to the passengers. The district police later reached the spot and recovered the damaged the auto-rickshaw and the motorcycle. According to preliminary investigation, the police suspect that the auto-rickshaw was overcrowded when the accident happened.
